Invisible Cities (2010)

Invisible cities is a generative virtual environment that views the city of Chicago by imagining radio transmission signals as light sources. These representations of transmissions flock above the the built environment, exposing its structure as shadowy projections through the illumination provided by the communications networks that envelop it. Small time fragments of these radio transmissions are received, interleaved and diffused into the surrounding space, creating a soundscape consisting of a slowly shifting amalgam of simultaneous broadcasts. Together, these sounds and images reveal the complexities of the urban environment not as a single, comprehensive image, but rather as a hybrid series of fragments that are revealed in varying combinations over time.
